A working meteorologist’s marine dashboard — gales, tropical systems, and the slow-weather charts that ship routing turns on. Built as a gift.

An avid and life-long meteorologist. A storm that rolled through Gaithersburg, Maryland, hooked him on weather when he was a kid. Vermont for the degree. Now he directs ocean-routing operations, moving cargo across the Pacific and Atlantic on the strength of a forecast. Mostly gales and tropical systems — the slow weather ships plan around days out.

Every panel and every link on this site points back to a NOAA, NASA, or academic source. No commercial data, no API keys, no ads. The visible cards are watched stations and curated tools; the search box ties it all together. The dashboard is built to load fast and stay quiet, the way a ship’s bridge does at 0300.

Everything here runs on public and open data — no commercial feeds, no API keys, no ads. Credits and licences:

Weather & ocean models
Open-Meteo forecast, marine, and ERA5 reanalysis over NOAA and ECMWF open data (CC-BY 4.0).
Observations
NOAA — National Weather Service, National Data Buoy Center, CO-OPS tides & currents, National Hurricane Center, and the OSMC global in-situ feed drawn from the WMO Global Telecommunication System. US Government works, public domain.
Tropical cyclone tracks
Active-storm forecast tracks worldwide — NOAA’s National Hurricane Center for the Atlantic and eastern/central Pacific, and the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center for the western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and southern hemisphere — via Esri’s aggregated Active Hurricanes layer.

Ship routing
Sea routes computed with searoute-ts (MIT) over the Eurostat searoute maritime network (EUPL-1.2), built on Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s global shipping-lane network. Port, vessel, and trade-lane reference figures are compiled facts from public and industry sources.
Mapping & rendering
